Marina Abramović - The Artist Is Present: This emotional exhibit, held in the Museum of Modern Art for three months in early spring 2010, featured Abramović sitting in a chair for the entirety of the day at the museum. Visitors were encouraged to sit silently across from the artist for a duration of their choosing, becoming participants in the artwork. Abramović, acting as an “emotional mirror” to the patrons, silently stared at them, often inducing deeply profound and heartbreaking reactions.
I am really, really fascinated by this. When I tried to empathize just sitting in a chair across from someone and being present in that silence and face-to-face contact, the welling vulnerability brought a mist to my eye, too. Think about this— how often today, in the age of emails, text messages, and tumblr apps, do we spend a prolonged a focused period of time maintaining eye contact with anybody. Extra credit: see Ann Hamilton’s mouth-operated pinhole cameras, at 11:00-13:00 in the video. Hear what she says about face-to-face?

I just want to spend a day with you.
No worries, just fun. Starting early in the day, ending when the moon is at it’s peak. No plans, just what we want to do. If it’s walking around a park, or biking on the pier, as long as we are having fun. We can go to a restaurant to eat, or possibly have a surprise picnic. We could talk about anything. If we’re just catching up, joking around with each other, venting, or just enjoying the silence of the moment. Toward the end of the day, we can find somewhere to sit and enjoy the sunset as the stars pop into the sky, one by one, watching the moonrise. One day.

Late night thoughts
It’s difficult to act like you’re fine when the person you like, likes someone else… let alone can’t decide who to choose and you’re there, dangling on a string; either waiting to fall or waiting to be caught. It’s even more difficult when that person talks about her. It’s pathetic. It’s pathetic to be sitting there and acting like you’re fine. I’m pathetic.
What sucks is that he could be doing the exact same thing with her.
